Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each dc.

Row 4 onwards: Rep rows 2-3 until you have a strap at least 36 inches long. Fasten off.

TASSEL

Make five tassels. Here’s how to make a tassel:

1. Cut or fold up a sturdy piece of cardboard that’s about half to one inch longer than the desired length of the tassel you want to make. My tassel is 3 inches long so I used a cardboard 3.5 inches long.

2. Wrap the yarn lengthwise around the cardboard as may times as you need to get a good thick tassel. I wrapped the yarn for my tassel about 15 times.

3. Get another yarn cut to 12 inches and slip this under the wound yarn and pull up towards the top. Now tie this yarn (called a “hanging loop”) securely around the top of the tassel. Slide the tassel off the cardboard then cut the yarn at the base.

4. Cut another piece of yarn about 3 times the length of the tassel and wrap this tightly around all the strands about half to an inch away from the hanging loop of the tassel. Secure the ends of the wrapping yarn by threading them under the strands and down through the center of the tassel. Trim the ends with sharp scissors.

BALLS (Make 2)

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 5 sc in first ch. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, [sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] all around. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 5: As in rnd 4.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, [sc in next sc, 2 sc tog in next 2 sc] all around. Join with sl st to first sc.

Rnd 7: Ch 1, [2 sc tog in next 2 sc] all around. Fill ball with polyester fiberfill or with pieces of same yarn. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING

Using the long tail of the rings and working on the wrong side, sew the rings over the large spaces on either side of each 3-leaf motif at the four corners of the square. You will need 8 rings for each side of the bag – a total of 16 rings.

Now, to join the seams and make the trim around the bag: With wrong sides facing and working through both front and back sections of bag, join yarn with sl st to corner 4-ch loop. Ch 1, sc in same loop, ch 3, [picot, dc in same loop] twice; ch 2, sc in next sc, *ch 2, in next loop make (dc, picot, dc, picot, dc), ch 2, sc in next sc; rep fr * all around the three sides of the bag.

Now working the top opening of the bag, in each 4-ch loop make (2 sc, picot, 2 sc) all around. Fasten off.

To make the ties: With two strands of yarn, crochet a long chain about 12 inches long. Sew one crocheted ball to one end of the tie. Pass the open end of the tie through the front, back and front of two loops at rnd 8 of the bag. Refer to model photo to see where the tie should be passed through. Sew the other ball to the other end of the tie.
Sew the strap to the sides of the bag.

Weave in all ends. Sew bag lining if desired.
