Rosette Edging No. 202


The Rosette Edging No. 202 comes from "The Home Art Crochet Book" edited by Flora Klickmann. The book is available freely at The Antique Pattern Library. The edging is found on page 1, Section I, Edgings for the Average Worker.

I reproduce the original antique pattern here (below) and provide a version that I have edited (with step-by-step photos) for the modern crocheter. For the sample shown, I used crochet cotton thread size 8 and steel hook size 1.2mm.

UK crochet terminology

First Scallop:



Row 1: Ch 10, in first ch make (2 tr, 5 ch, 2 tr, 7 ch, 2 tr, 5 ch, 2 tr).



Row 2: Ch 9, turn, sk first sp, in next sp make (2 tr, 5 ch, 2 tr, 7 ch, 2 tr, 5 ch, 2 tr).



Row 3: Rep row 2.





Row 4: Ch 5, sk 5-ch loop and 2-tr, in 9-ch loop make 6 loops of 16-ch, ch 8, turn, dc in top of last loop, ch 3,  4 tr into same loop, 5 tr in each of the next 5 loops. Turn.



Row 5: Ch 6, dc in sp bet first and second scallop, *ch 6, dc in sp bet next scallop, rep fr * for all scallops, end with ch 6, dc bet tr and 3-ch at end of last scallop. Turn.



Row 6: 7 dc in each 6-ch sp, (except for first scallop, catch the end of this row into adjoining scallop). Turn.



Row 7: Ch 8, dc in sp bet first and second scallop, *ch 8, dc in sp bet next scallop, rep fr * for all scallops, end with ch 8, dc in last st at end of last scallop. Turn.



Row 8: Fill in each 8-ch sp with 9 dc. Ch 5, turn.

Succeeding Scallops:

Row 9: *Sk first 5-ch sp, in next 7-ch sp make (2 tr, 5 ch, 2 tr, 7 ch, 2 tr, 5 ch, 2 tr). Ch 9, turn. Rep fr * two more times, omitting 9-ch in last rep.

Row 10: Ch 5, sk 5-ch loop and 2-tr, in 9-ch loop make 6 loops of 16-ch, ch 8, turn, dc in top of last loop, ch 3, 4 tr into same loop, 5 tr in each of the next 5 loops. Turn.

Row 11: Ch 6, dc in sp bet first and second scallop, *ch 6, dc in sp bet next scallop, rep fr * for all scallops, end with ch 6, dc bet tr and 3-ch at end of last scallop. Turn.

Row 12: 7 dc in each 6-ch sp, (except for first scallop, catch the end of this row into adjoining scallop). Turn.

Row 13: Ch 8, dc in sp bet first and second scallop, *ch 8, dc in sp bet next scallop, rep fr * for all scallops, end with ch 8, dc in last st at end of last scallop. Turn.

Fill in each 8-ch sp with 9 dc. Ch 5, turn.

Rep fr Row 9 to desired length.

Finishing

Add a straightening line at sewing-on edge of ch and dc. In this model I used (ch 6, in 9-ch loop make tr, ch, tr, ch, tr).
